Band Creates Music Video Using Google’s DeepDream
There have been a number of technological advances made in the last decade. With today’s innovation in the online world, it is no wonder famous search engine, Google, has created a program that uses Artificial Intelligence technologies. Google released DeepDream in the beginning of 2015. The company has spent the last few years actually teaching computers how to see, understand, and appreciate our world. An important goal of DeepDream is that it will allow programs to classify images just by “looking” at them. A popular group from the United Kingdom, Years & Years, created a music video by using DeepDream. The results were pretty amazing.
Exploring more of DeepDream
DeepDream is an open source software tool, which creates amazing visualizations, on top of current footage, by using artificial neural networks. You can give DeepDream a couple of images and let it know what objects that image contains. For example, if you have a photo of a dog sitting outside, the program will transform that image into something similar, to what it already knows. This will allow individuals to see strange artifacts morphing to look like the image from a dream. DeepDream’s website gave human eyes or faces as an example. This image might morph into an object it recognizes, like a pyramid. Essentially, the program is “dreaming” about what it has learned.
Years & Years debuts a DeepDream music video
Years & Years is a pop group located in the UK, and just release their full-length debut album in July, with Interscope Records. The band received amazing reviews, and their music is considered “dance-pop”. With this kind of sound, the DeepDream program seemed like a great option to use for a music video. The video was created for a remix to their song titled “Desire”. Their music video displays wilderness footage, which DeepDream uses to develop amazing visualizations, creating an almost disorienting illusion. In creating the music video, humans interacted with an artificial program to design and dream up creativity.
The band behind the idea
Years & Years was really intrigued with the idea of using Artificial Intelligence to interpret a music video. Brian Harrison was the video director for the music video. First, footage was shot in several Southern California locations to get different outdoor visuals. Upon editing the footage, Harrison worked with engineers of the Artificial Experience to help create visualizations. Both the band and Harrison believed that the idea of creating this music video using DeepDream was a cool idea, but realized it is extremely innovative and uses cutting edge technology. It is also important that the fans love the finished product, and this music video definitely delivers an amazing look into new technology.
Whether or not you are a fan of the group Years & Years, their music video using DeepDream is a must see! It is very visually stimulating, and provides a new experience, unlike any other music video, especially once you know how the footage was created. You can watch the music video on YouTube, and see for yourself!
